R. Vern Smith

R. Vern Smith, 82, died Tuesday (Dec. 24, 2002) at Kansas Christian Home. He was born Dec. 8, 1920, to Russell Vernon and Ina Belle (Anderson) Smith in Pike County, Ill. They preceded him in death. He married M. Maxine Smith June 27, 1943, in Hutchinson. She survives of the home. He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church in Newton. He worked as a truck driver for KGE for 23 years. He was a member of the Harvey County Farm Bureau and a former member of the Special Police in Newton. He was also a former member of the Newton Gem and Mineral Club. He had volunteered at the Economy Shop and Et Cetera Shop in Newton. He also played with the city band for five years.

Other survivors include: two sisters, Evelyn Stephenson of Pittsfield, Ill., and Etta Carlander of Springfield, Ill.; three nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Visitation will be until 9 p. m. today and from 8 a. m. too noon Friday at Petersen Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be 1 p. m. Friday at Salem United Methodist Church with the Rev. LeRoy Bott officiating.

Burial will be in Burrton City Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with Salem United Methodist church in care of the funeral home.
