Graveside service for Robert H.
Broeckel, 76, was Monday at the Dusty Cemetery, followed by a
memorial service at the Onecho Bible Church.
Mr. Broeckel died last Thursday. Born
in Colfax, he grew up on the family farm near Dusty and attended a
little country school on the Little Alkali Road near his home. He
attended LaCrosse High School.
Before enlisting in the Army he helped
his parents on the farm.
Mr. Broeckel was a telegraph operator
during the Korean War and spent time stationed at Camp Pendleton,
Calif. Upon his honorable discharge from the military, he married
Lydia Quenzer in 1955 in Paso Robles, Calif. They settled in Dusty,
where they farmed for many years.
His wife died in 1977.
In 1981 he married Verna Vogt in
Heston, Kan. They farmed together until 1997, when his wife died. A
farming accident that same year forced Mr. Broeckel from the field,
and he lived with his family in Pullman. He moved to Whitman Health
and Rehab more than four years ago.
He was a longtime member of the Country
Bible Church in Dusty and later attended Onecho Bible Church. He was
a member of the Whitman County Chaplain’s Board and a member of
Gideon’s International.
He enjoyed horses.
Survivors include three children,
Janice Pauls of Colfax, Ed Broeckel of Dusty and Dellene Burdsall of
San Jose, Calif.; and eight grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to
the Whitman County Chaplain’s Program.
