Obituary
Robert L. "Bob" Funk, 87, died Thursday, July 24,
2014, at Asbury Park in Newton.
He was born Nov. 21, 1926, in Newton to Theo and Lydia
(Hiebert) Funk.
He lived in Hillsboro, where his father owned and ran a Meat
Market and Slaughtering House. He attended public school and graduated from
Hillsboro High School. He grew up and was baptized in the First Mennonite
Church of Hillsboro.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, where he was
a Pharmacist's Mate for two years. After the war he attended Bethel College for
one year while lettered in football and was a yell leader. He went to Kansas
State University where he graduated with a degree in Architecture in 1953.
During his career he worked for the railroad, was the Park Superintendent,
retired from Beech Aircraft as Plant Manager and owned the Architectural
Services Company where he worked with contractors on residential and commercial
construction.
While attending Kansas State University, he married Phyllis
Hanneman in 1950. After graduation they moved to Newton. They were married for
58 years prior to her death on May 4, 2008.
Bob and Phyllis were very active in the community. They had
been involved in the following organizations: Elk's Club, Lions Club, American
Legion, VFW, City Planning Commission, Republican Precinct Chairman,
Toastmaster's and the Harvey County Historical Society.
Robert was a Midian Shrine and Grand Mason of the Harvey
County Shrine Club. He served in the Shriners Harvey County Caboose Hobo's,
Lodge 142, for 40 years. He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason.
Robert and Phyllis were founding members of Trinity Heights
United Methodist Church in Newton. They truly loved God and the church was very
important to them. They served on Mission Trips to Guatemala, Haiti and Samoa
where they built churches.
He is survived by three sons: Jon and Mary Funk of Manhattan,
Lyle and Debbie Funk of Huber Heights, Ohio, and Mike Funk of Houston, Texas;
three grandsons: Josh and Mackenzie Garcia, Nathan and Tiffany Garcia and Ryan
and Jared Walter; granddaughter: Lindsay Funk; and great-grandson: Kaleb
Walter.
He was preceded in death by his wife: Phyllis Funk; parents:
Theo and Lydia Funk; brother: Rolf Lee Funk; and sister: Rosana Lee Funk.
A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 30,
at Trinity Heights United Methodist Church of Newton. A visitation is scheduled
from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, at Petersen Funeral Home. The family will be
present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. to greet friends. Burial will be at 2 p.m.
Wednesday, July 30, at the Haven of Rest Cemetery in rural Hillsboro.
