Carlton H. Gates

Carlton H. Gates, 87, died Wednesday (Nov. 10, 2004) at Friendly Acres Retirement Community in Newton. He was born Dec. 7, 1916, to Ralph and Grace (Van Houten) Gates in Harvey County. They preceded him in death. He married Lila Brenneman March 3, 1968, in Newton. She survives of the home. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Newton. He retired in 1979 as a road crew foreman for Harvey County. He was a member of Newton Lodge No. 142 AF&AM, Order of the Eastern Star Newton Chapter No. Five, Newton Commandery No. Nine, Royal Arch Chapter No 27, Scottish Rite 32 degree of Wichita, Wichita Council No. 12, Wichita Commandery No. 12, Topeka Council No. One and the Ancient Toltec Rite and Newton Toltec. He enjoyed camping and fishing. He also bowled and love to garden.

Other survivors include a sister; Elnora Baxter of Newton. He was also preceded in death by: a son, Larry Gates; and a brother, Paul Gates.

Visitation will be from 9 a. m. To 5 p. m. Friday and from 1 to 9 p. m. Sunday with family greeting friends from 7 to 9 p. m. Sunday, all a Petersen Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be 10 a. m. Monday at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Timothy Conner of First Baptist Church officiating. An Order of the Eastern Star service will be conducted at the funeral home immediately following the funeral service.

Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. A Masonic commital will take place at the cemetery.

Memorials have been established with Hospice Care of Kansas, the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association, all in care of the funeral home.
