Obituary

Mildred I. Klassen, 92, of Winfield, passed away Friday evening, Dec. 13, 2013, at Cumbernauld Village in Winfield.

Born on Nov. 18, 1921, in Sedgwick, she was the daughter of Eugene and Anna (Buller) Myers. Her parents divorced when she was five, and she lived with the Anna Suderman family for the next five years. She then lived with John and Helene Kopper of rural Whitewater. She attended Kellas grade school and Plum Grove grade school. Mildred graduated from high school at Hesston College and Academy. She later graduated from Bethel Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in August of 1944.

She was united in marriage to J. Herschel Klassen on Sept. 3, 1933, in Whitewater. They spent the first two years in Dodge City and later San Antonio, Texas, while Herschel was in the military. While in Dodge City, she was employed for Marion County as a public health nurse. Mildred worked in El Dorado at the Susan B. Anthony hospital as a RN. She was the director of nursing at the Peabody Nursing Home.

They later moved to the Burns community and farmed for six years. In 1952 they moved to Whitewater. Mildred worked at the Bethel Deaconess Nursing Home in Newton and retired as activities director in 1984. The couple then moved to Winfield. Mr. Klassen preceded her in death on Nov. 3, 2007.

Mildred was baptized upon the confession of her faith at the Emmaus Mennonite Church and became a member there in 1937. She was a member of the Cornerstone Bible Fellowship Church. She enjoyed painting on items that Herschel made while woodworking, putting together jigsaw puzzles and china painting.

Her family includes: her son, Thomas S. Klassen and wife, Elaine of Aurora, Colo.; her daughters, Janice I. Kindt and husband, Charles of Newkirk, Okla., and Donna L. Bogner and husband, Mark of Winfield; her daughter-in-law, Mary Klassen of Florida; her grandchildren: Angela Gondzi, Sherman C. Klassen, Harry K. Kindt, Stevie Simpson, Derek Cunningham, Kasi Lauderdale and Jacob L. Klassen; and her great-grandchildren, Ejay, Jaden, Kai, Marley, Taryn, Kaitlin, Mackenzie, Kathryn, Charles, Isabela, Nicolas, Chloe and Brielle, and Jacob and Kaitlin.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Sherman H. Klassen; her daughter-in-law, Diania Klassen; her great-grandson, Brennan Lauderdale; her brother, William Myers; and her sisters, Louise Hebert and Ruby Stucky.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow at Rose Valley Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013. The family will greet friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

A memorial has been established in Mildred's name for Harden Hospice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
