Ray J. Kaufman
Ray J. Kaufman, 97, retired dairyman, wheat farmer and antique collector, died Saturday (Feb. 19, 1994) at Schowalter Villa Retirement Community in Hesston where he had lived since 1988. He was a Newton resident from 1944 to 1988.
He was born in McPherson County near Moundridge on March 31, 1896, to John P. Kaufman and Caroline Schrag Kaufman. He married Emma Schrag in Moundridge on April 4, 1921. She died in 1993.
He was a member of Bethel College Mennonite Church in North Newton.
Survivors include one son, Vilas Kaufman of Newton; three daughters, Velora Peters and Betty Washburn, both of Newton,  and Dorothy Kaufman of Wichita; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Hazel; one son, Clayton; one grandson; and two granddaughters.
The funeral service will be at 11 a. m. Tuesday at Bethel College Mennonite Church in North Newton with Ed R. Stucky and Don Kaufman officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Newton.
Friends may call from 1 to 9 p. m. today at Petersen Funeral Home.
Memorials may be sent to Mennonite Central Committee, Bethel College Mennonite Church, or Schowalter Villa, all in care of the funeral home.
