Obituary: Eva Lucile Cies

Eva Lucile Cies left this earth on Tuesday (Aug. 21, 2012) from Asbury Park in Newton, singing praises for church, her loving family, caring friends and the beauty of the earth that had sustained her for 96 years. She was born to the Rev. S.D. and Ethel (Kemp) Hower on June 7, 1916, in Hiawatha. Following her father’s ministry, Lucile received her early education in Hanover, Bern and Jewell, graduating from Topeka High School. While attending Butler County Community College in El Dorado, Lucile met Jack Tanner. They were married on Dec. 1, 1935, in El Dorado. To them were born Daniel, James, Martha and Donna. Following Jack’s death in a refinery accident in July 1943, Lucile taught school at Red Top School near El Dorado, Flat Rock Childrens Home in Ohio and in Scandia. Entering the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Lucile purchased a large home at the foot of the hill. By rooming and boarding eight male Wesley Foundation students and boarding seven female university students in addition to her four children, Lucile was able to complete her bachelor of science degree in education with honors. While at K.U., Lucile met the Rev. Herbert A. Cies, and they were married on Jan. 27, 1949, in Lawrence. To them was born a son, Edwin Lee. Following his ministry, Lucile taught in Colorado, Wyoming and Montana until her retirement in 1976. Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Herbert A. Cies of Newton; sons, Daniel Tanner of Billings, Mont., James Tanner of Hemet, Calif., and Edwin Cies of Belvue, Colo.; daughters, Martha Cahal of Acworth, Ga., and Donna Mourey of Newton; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Lucile was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Paul and Bob Hower; and sister, Betty Burton. Private family services will be conducted later as cremation has been effected. Memorials have been established with Asbury Park in Newton, Intermountain Home for Children in Helena, Mont., and the Iliff School of Theology in Denver, Colo.
