Karter, Ruth

The Newton Kansan

Ruth Karter

Ruth Karter, 85, of Newton, was called to her heavenly home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday (July 7, 2012).

She was born on Aug. 8, 1926, on a farm in rural Newton to Frank Karter and Olga Budde Karter.

When only a few years old they moved to a farm east of Walton, Ks where she spent the remainder of her youth. She attended Walton grade school through the eighth grade and graduated from Walton High School in 1944. She then immediately went to work as an administrative clerk for the Santa Fe Railroad office in Newton, where she spent the next 44 years of productive employment before retiring in 1988.

Ruth was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church in Newton as she was baptized, confirmed and remained an active member in service and attendance. She enjoyed being a member of Ladies Aide and Dorcas Circle, as well as playing dominoes and card games with the church's senior citizen's group. She was a dedicated volunteer in the church office assisting the staff, and enjoyed helping assemble the bulletins every week and lending support wherever and whenever needed. She also enjoyed going to coffee with her close friends and loved to travel with family and friends. Ruth was a caring and kind lady in her own special, quiet way and was loved by many. Since Ruth didn't have her own children, she was especially caring and affectionate to her nieces, Vickie Widdel and Sondra Groene, and nephews, Bryan Reusser and Troy Reusser, whom deeply loved her as well.

She is survived by: a sister and brother-in-law, Della Mae Reusser and Dwaine Reusser of Newton; nieces Vickie Widdel of Sturgis, Mich., and Sondra (Matt) Groene of Winfield; nephews Bryan (Therese) Reusser of Tulsa, Okla., and Troy (Sharon) Reusser of Wichita; great-nieces Kara (Rob) Falkenstein of Sturgis, Mich., and Kimberly (Brian) Simpson of Kansas City, Mo.; great-nephews Dr. Steven Groene of Indianapolis and Andrew Groene (Kaitlyn) Groene of Kansas City, Kan.; great twin nephews, Jackson Reusser and Jacob Reusser of Wichita; great-great-nephew Seth Falkenstein of Sturgis, Mich.; and great-great-niece Hannah Falkenstein of Sturgis, Mich. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, and great-nephew Joel Widdel of Sturgis, Mich.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church, 225 S. Poplar in Newton, with the Reverend Aaron Filipek presiding. Graveside service will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton. Visitation will be from from 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday with the family greeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Petersen Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church.
