Obituary

HESSTON — James R. Duncan, 90, passed away on Wednesday (March 21, 2012) in Wichita.

He was born on Aug. 7, 1921, in Hutchinson, the son of Olin D. and Ethyl Lindsey Duncan. He had served in the U. S. Army and was a member of Garden Community Mennonite Church in Hesston. In 1942, he married Rosalie Lamb. She passed away on Nov. 11, 1998.

James was a faithful husband to his wife, Rosalie, for 56 years. He loved his five children and their spouses, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Music was a part of his entire life, beginning as a boy playing the euphonium in the school band in Hutchinson. He loved to see his children participate in their individual talents and encouraged them to excel. He followed college and professional sports all of his life and enjoyed watching the current important games. He loved coaching and watching his children participate in sports, as well.

James had a competitive side and enjoyed playing indoor and outdoor games with his kids, from golf to badminton to card games of many kinds. He was a self-motivated man who provided for his family as a salesman throughout his life.

James professed Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was faithful to lead his family in attending a Bible-believing church on a regular basis and to participate in church activities, trips and programs. He believed the Bible was God’s Word and his salvation was through Christ alone.  James’ family believes like he did, that while he is now absent from his earthly body, he is present with the Lord. One of his favorite verses was Hebrews 11:1: “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.”

Survivors include his children, Ronald (Tana) Duncan of Conyers, Ga., Doug (Juanita) Duncan of Lander, Wyo., Judy (David) Welfelt of Newton, John Duncan of Charleston, S.C., and Donald (Helena) Duncan of Wichita; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and John; and one sister, Helen Duncan.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Garden Community Mennonite Church in Hesston, with Pastor David Norris officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorials may be sent to Garden Community Mennonite Church, in care of Miller-Ott Funeral Home, 107 S. Lancaster, Hesston, KS 67062.
