Arthur Warren Zook

Obituary

East Wenatchee, Wash. — Arthur Warren Zook, 81, passed away on Friday (Feb. 17, 2012) at his home in East Wenatchee, Wash.

He was born on April 27, 1930, in Newton to George and Gladys White Zook. He was the first in their family of six children.

Arthur grew up on a farm in rural Newton, attended Zimmerdale country school and graduated from Newton High School in 1949. He attended Central College in McPherson and Seattle Pacific College, where he received a degree in physics and math. He served his country as a sergeant in the U.S. Army, spending 14 months in Korea. He married Rosemary Holmes on June 13, 1954.

Art worked with the space program for 20 years, living in New Mexico, California and Houston, Texas. He was the lead aerospace engineer on a number of space projects and enjoyed working with the astronauts in Houston and traveling to Florida to watch “his” shuttle launch.

In 1976, the family moved to Tonasket, Wash., where Art became a refrigeration mechanic for Gold Digger Apples in Oroville. He was equally proud of both careers.

Art enjoyed doing volunteer work and served with the Church of the Brethren Disaster Child Care Program, which took him to New York City after 9/11 and to Florida following a hurricane. He also was a volunteer at Central Washington Hospital. He was an active member of Kiwanis. His faith and church were always an important part of his life. He put work and providing for his wife and family before himself.

Art is survived by his wife of 57 years and their three children, Craig (Cindy) of Houston, Mike of Norfolk, Va., and Teresa (Terry) Fagin of Morton, Wash. He also is survived by one brother, Wilbur (Phyllis) of Olathe; two sisters, Marjorie Crego of Wichita and Marian (Loren) Heidner of Newton; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his brothers, David and Lloyd; and his daughter, Cheryl and son-in-law, Dean Nicholson.

The memorial service will be at noon Saturday at Sunnyslope Church in East Wenatchee, Wash.
