Obituary: Henrietta C. Horst

Henrietta C. Horst, 98, Newton, former Abilene resident, died on Tuesday (April 26, 2011) at Newton Presbyterian Manor in Newton. 

She was born on Nov. 21, 1912, in Harvey County near Whitewater, the daughter of Guy Anson and Dora Ester (Eilerts) Roach. She grew up in the Whitewater community, attended the local schools and graduated from Whitewater High School. She received a bachelor's degree in education from Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia. On Aug. 18, 1938, she was united in marriage with R. Lee Horst at the Federated Church in Whitewater. They made their home in Abilene from 1947 until they moved to Newton to make their home there in 1998. 

She was active in the Abilene community. She taught at Hearts Content School north of Abilene from 1954 to 1956 and at McKinley Elementary School from 1956 until 1978. She was a member of Abilene First Presbyterian Church, where she sang solos until 1998. She was president of the Beta Theta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma from 1966 to 1968 and president of the Abilene branch of the American Association of University Women from 1965 to 1966. 

Surviving are two sons, Gordon Horst and wife, Deena of Salina, and Kenneth Horst and wife, Jan of Newton; a daughter, Carolyn Horst Morris and husband, Dallas of Houston, Texas; seven grandchildren, Randall Horst of Rogers, Ark., Rebecca Horst McKnight of Salina, Grant Horst of Olathe, Susan Horst Fox of Newton, Michelle Horst of Brooklyn, N.Y., David Morris of Centennial, Colo., and Allison Morris of Houston, Texas; 15 great-grandchildren; and other relatives. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee on June 4, 2002; a son, Ronald Horst; and a brother, Robert Roach. 

Family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home in Abilene, where friends may call until time of service. 

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Presbyterian Church in Abilene. The Rev. Robert Frasier will officiate. Burial will be in the Abilene Cemetery. 

The family of Henrietta Horst suggests friends may contribute to First Presbyterian Church in Abilene in her memory. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.
