Obituary: Ruth W. Becker

Ruth W. Becker, 96, died on Wednesday (Feb. 16, 2011) at Schowalter Villa in Hesston.

She was born on Nov. 4, 1914, in Tacoma, Wash., to John L. and Lucille (Howe) Randall. On Aug. 21, 1936, she married Alvin J. Becker in rural Burrton, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 20, 2000.

In her youth, Ruth loved playing basketball, riding horses and studying mathematics. In her later years, she gravitated to gardening, painting in oils and watercolors, and researching family genealogy.

Ruth was an active member of the former Hebron Mennonite Church in Buhler. Ruth and Alvin served Mennonite Central Committee in Montevideo, Uruguay, for several years. In 1988, Ruth and Alvin moved from the Randall farm to Schowalter Villa and quickly became part of the community, establishing life-long relationships with residents and staff.

She is survived by her daughter, Frances Becker and Fran's partner, Chris Adams, of San Francisco; sister, Mary Lou Seedle of Texarkana, Texas; granddaughter, Brenda Adams and Brenda's husband, Matthew Springman, of San Francisco.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and one brother, Richard Randall.

A celebration of Ruth's life will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Schowalter Villa Chapel in Hesston. Chaplain Wendy Miller will preside. The family will conduct a private graveside committal service.

In lieu of floral donations, the family suggests friends plant a flower, shrub or tree in memory of Ruth and her love of gardening.

Alternatively, donations may be made to the Schowalter Villa Garden Renovation Fund in Ruth's name. Donations may be sent in care of Petersen Funeral Home, 215 N. Main St., Newton, KS 67114.
