The Rev. Henry H. Murray

The Rev. Henry H. Murray, 84, died Thursday (Sept. 29, 2005) at Special Services Hospital in Wichita. He was born March 19, 1921, to David Harris and Ina Desmond (Mabuce) Murray in Las Animas, Calif. They preceded him in death. He married Helen Farrar on May 29, 1945, at United Methodist Church in Norwich. She survives of Newton. Henry graduated from Southwestern College in Winfield. He then attended Drew Theological Seminary in Madison, N.J., where he received his master of divinity degree. Education was important to Henry and Helen, so they originated a scholarship fund in their name at Southwestern College.

He was a member of the Kansas West Annual Conference. Henry also was a member of the Newton Lions Club, receiving the Melvin Jones Award in May 2005.

His love for travel led him to become a tour director. His love for people both young and old was strong. He loved a good joke, fishing and woodworking. Henry also enjoyed music and was known as the choir chaplain at his church.

Others survivors include: a son and daughter-in-law, Harold W. Murray and wife Nancy of Kimberling City, Mo.; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy (Murray) and George Mulholland of Gaithersburg, Md.; a sister, Virginia Hughes of Oklahoma City; grandchildren, Vance and wife Laura, Patrick and wife Yvette, and Benjamin; and great-grandchildren, Parker and Gabrielle Mulholland.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today with family greeting friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Heights United Methodist Church. Graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. Saturday at Upchurch Cemetery. The Rev. Phil Fischer will officiate.

Memorials have been established with the Henry and Helen Murray Endowed Scholarship Fund of Southwestern College in care of the funeral home.
