Obituary

Virginia L. Brown, 81, died on Wednesday (July 20, 2011) at her residence in Newton.

She was born on a farm on Aug. 18, 1929, in rural Durham to Edwin and Elizabeth (Zitterkopf) Garrett.

She attended Durham High School.

She was married to Howard Schultz for 34 years. They had three children: Sandra, Robert and Steven. Howard and Virginia enjoyed camping and traveling in their R.V. until his death in 1982.

She worked 33 1/2 years at Axtell Clinic. On July 23, 1991, she married Bill G. Brown. They were married for 20 years. She continued her travels with Bill, spending three months in Florida a year for 15 years. She helped out at the Newton Public Golf Course for several years. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Newton.

She is survived by her husband, Bill; brothers, Harry Garrett, and Don and Donna Garrett; daughter, Sandra Entz and fiancé, Robert Bryan; son, Robert and Patricia Schultz; stepdaughter, Shirley and Ron Flickinger; stepsons, Bill and Pam Brown, and Mike Brown; grandchildren, Rusty Entz, Ginger and Tim Hurst, Martina and Jeremy Tomlinson, and Elizabeth and Chad Greenup; stepgrandchildren, Stacey and Jeff Weihe, Mike Flickinger, Ryan and Tonya Flickinger, Laurie and Brett Lindsay, Melanie Roberts, Emily and Thomas Hawk, Molly and Patrick Stillman, Gabby Brown, Lindsey Brown, Patrick Brown, Ryan Brown and Katie Brown; and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Howard Schultz; and son, Steven Schultz.

Visitation is from 1 to 8 p.m. today at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton. The family will be present to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

A graveside committal service will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at Greenwood Cemetery.

The family will celebrate Virginia's life with a memorial service that will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. James Anderson will preside.
