NED ROSS

1929 - 2017

Obituary

Ned Byrl Ross, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, peacefully passed away on Monday (Aug. 28, 2017) in his home at the Presbyterian Manor in Newton.

Ned was born in Newton, Iowa, on Sept. 27, 1929, to Merrill and Bessie (Reiste) Ross, growing up on a farm near Minburn, Iowa, as the youngest child with two brothers, Robert and John. Ned graduated from Minburn High, attended Iowa State University, then proudly served in the U.S. Air Force for two terms, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant.

While stationed in Salina one evening, Ned and a buddy travelled to Newton to go roller skating, where Ned happened to meet his future bride, Arlene Nickel, whom he married on Feb. 28, 1953. While living near the air base, their first son, Jon, was born. Shortly afterwards, Ned received an honorable discharge.

The young family moved to Newton to be near Arlene's parents and family. Once in Newton, their second son, Brad, was born, then 11 months later their only daughter, Kim, was born.

Ned worked in the automotive parts business in Newton for more than 50 years, working 18 years at Holstine Chevrolet. He then opened and managed the local NAPA auto parts store for 18 years. Ned worked for the Scott family at Newton Auto Supply for approximately 14 more years before retiring from the auto parts business.

Ned worked another six years in semi-retirement for the North Dillons store, delivering flowers and prescriptions until poor health forced him into full retirement in 2010.

In addition to his love of watching sports, Ned loved his family. He enjoyed his time with many friends, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; dedicating his last few years to helping take care of Arlene, who lived with Ned at the Manor until her passing in February.

Ned was preceded in death by his parents; along with his wife, Arlene; and both brothers, Robert and John, who passed away earlier in this year.

Ned is survived by his three children: sons, Jon (Kathy) Ross of Newton, Brad (Ladonna) Ross of Winfield; and daughter, Kim (Terry) Stubby of Helena, Montana; as well as five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A service celebrating Ned's life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 2, 2017) at the Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton, immediately followed by a reception for all friends and family at The Breadbasket restaurant in Newton.

Ned's family extends gratitude to his extended family at the Newton Presbyterian Manor, where Ned and Arlene made many great friends and received exceptional care and love.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorials in Ned's name may be made to Caring Hands Humane Society of Newton or the Salem United Methodist Church of Newton, in care of the funeral home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, KS 67114.

Condolences may be left at www.broadwaycolonialfh.com.

Arrangements are by Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, Newton.
