Her husband, Benjamin Deckert, wrote
this in his Day Book: "My wife Karolina was born in the year
1801 in what month or day I do not know. We were married March 24,
1823. My wife Karolina was born in Filehne in West Prussia and died
Dec. 17, 1874 in America on a Saturday in the town of Newton, Kansas.
We lived together in wedlock 52 years. We conceived 11 children, four
of them died and seven are still living."
Karolina was of a jolly nature and dark
complexioned. All of her children were born in Europe, and were
members of the Mennonite church.
When Karolina was 73 and her husband
was 80, they immigrated to America, leaving on November 3, 1874. The
ship they sailed on was the City of Montreal. They arrived in New
York on November 27, 1874 and began a long train ride to Newton,
Kansas, about December 6, 1874. The trip was too much for the frail
Karolina, and she died soon after arriving.
Karolina is buried in the southwest
part of the cemetery. Her marker is too worn to read.
