Vera Beth Breithaupt
Vera Beth Breithaupt, 89, of North Newton, died Sunday
(Sept. 20, 2009) at Newton Medical Center. She was born on Sept. 7, 1920, in
Newton to Edwin Charles and Maybelle Birdenia (Sloan) Dunlap. They preceded her
in death. On Feb. 22, 1953, she married Paul Samuel Breithaupt in Topeka. He
preceded her in death. Vera was a member of First United Church of Christ in
Newton. She worked as a clerk for the Santa Fe Railway for 26 years. Vera was
very involved in the Kansas State University Extension service in Waubaunsee
County, where she served the communities for nearly 12 years.
Vera was known for being a well-dressed lady and had a love
of hats. She had an extensive collection she acquired during the years. She
started giving her hats away in the recent past, and her friends and family
will remember her each time they see the hat she gave them.
Vera also had a love of Kansas and Newton history and
enjoyed sharing stories of her beloved state and town.
Family was very important to Vera, and she looked forward to
spending time with her loving family and many friends, whom she was proud of.
Survivors include daughter, Mary Beth and Stan Weiner of
Overland Park; sons, Robert and Nancy Breithaupt of Tucson, Ariz., and Marvin
and Mary Breithaupt of Tampa, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; and 22
great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Dunlap,
and brothers, Merle Dunlap, Clare Dunlap, Glenn Dunlap and Leroy Dunlap.
Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. today at Petersen
Funeral Home in Newton.
Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Greenwood
Cemetery, with the Rev. Bill Hickerson of First United Church of Christ in
Newton officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to First United Church of
Christ in care of the funeral home.
