She was active in PTA, Scouting, was chairman of T.B. Association of Doniphan County, a volunteer for Cancer and Heart Association, and served as Manager of the Care and Share store for the Ministerial Alliance in Greensburg, Kansas. After retirement, she resided on the Kansas Christian Home Campus for 30 years and became an active volunteer at the home and the Newton First Christian Church.

Firkins and wife Kammeron of Newton; and her daughter, Ann V.
