Ray N. Funk
NEWTON - Ray N. Funk, 84, died Saturday (Dec. 28, 2008) at his Newton residence.
He was born on March 9, 1924, in Newton to Alvin R. and Elma (Schroeder) Funk. They preceded him in death.
On Aug. 22, 1947, he married Betty Lou Weinbrenner in Reedly, Calif. She survives of the home.
Ray was a graduate of Hillsboro High School and Bethel College. He was a longtime Hillsboro resident and business owner. Ray and his wife retired to Newton from Hillsboro four years ago.
He was a member of Bethel College Mennonite Church in North Newton and a former member of Trinity Mennonite Church in Hillsboro.
He owned and operated the Gambles hardware store and the Trail Lanes Bowling Center in Hillsboro. Ray was a member of the founding group of the Hillsboro Industrial Park. He also was a member of the Kiwanis Club.
He enjoyed watching and following Bethel College football and looked forward to spending time with his loving family and many friends.
Other survivors include his sons, Mark and Donna Funk of North Newton, and Rodney Funk of Hillsboro-Lehigh; daughters, Jan and John Kelly of Newton, Miriam and Rick Siebert of Marshfield, Mo., and Carole and Marcus Brown of Cypress, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Fern and John Mishler of Ransom.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton, with family receiving friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bethel College Mennonite Church in North Newton, with Heidi Regier Kreider of the church officiating.
A private burial will be at Haven of Rest Cemetery in Hillsboro.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bethel College Athletic Department or Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in care of the funeral home.
