Luther Arzo Ray

Luther Arzo Ray, 95, of Newton, died Saturday (Oct. 31, 2009) at Newton Medical Center in Newton.

He was born on July 20, 1914, in Hinton, Okla., the son of Albert Sr. and Henrietta Ray. The family moved to Newton in the 1920s. He graduated from Newton High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in March 1941, serving in the Pacific Theater. Luther was discharged in December 1945.

Luther married Goldena Louise Mitchell. They had been married for more than 70 years.

He had been the service manager for Sharp Mobile Homes in Newton for 60 years. He had been a member of the Rising Sun Lodge No. 69, F. & A.M. of Newton for many years.

Luther enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time in his garden. He was an avid supporter of the Democratic Party.

Survivors include his wife, Goldena, of the home in Newton; one son, George Ray Sr. of Newton; two daughters, Mary McClanahan of East Stroudsburg, Pa., and Paula Ray of Newton; one sister, Bernice Hutcherson of Wichita; his eight wonderful grandchildren, who took great care of him; and eight great-grandchildren.

Luther was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Kohlene Mason Ray, George William Ray, Albert Ray Jr. and Willis Howard Ray; and one sister, Goldie Eldira Jenkins.

Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First Church of the Nazarene in Newton.

Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with First Church of the Nazarene. Contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, KS 67114.
