Kendall C. Hay
Kendall C. Hay, 75, of Wellington, died Monday (Aug. 24,
2009) at Kansas Veteran's Home in Winfield.
Kendall was born on Oct. 2, 1933, in Newton, the son of Carl
and Ethel Kendall Hay. He graduated from Newton High School before earning his
bachelor of science degree from Kansas University in 1955.
Kendall served his country in the U.S. Army from 1956 to
1958.
Kendall was united in marriage with Vivian Kinsley on Dec.
1, 1957, in Pasadena, Md.
Kendall later earned his master's degree in 1961. Kendall
served as curriculum director and principal of Washington Elementary USD 353
and later was assistant superintendent.
Kendall was very involved in the Wellington community as a
member of First Presbyterian Church, the Mariners Sunday school class, the
Humane Society, and American Legion Post No. 90, where he was a former post
commander. He coached Babe Ruth baseball for 13 years, winning the state
director award in 1978.
He also was Chamber of Commerce president in 1976, served on
the Wellington City Council and was Wellington mayor from 1979 to 1983. Kendall
also served on the board of trustees for St. Luke's Hospital from 1986 to 1994.
Surviving to honor his memory are his wife, Vivian Hay, of
Wellington, sons, Timothy Hay and wife, Suzanne, of Lehi, Utah, and Kevin Hay
and wife, Susan, of Wellington; brothers, Jack Hay and wife, Fran, of Newton,
and Keith Hay and wife, Charlotte, of Newberg, Ore.; brother-in-law, Douglas
Kinsley of Annapolis, Md.; five grandchildren, Ryan Hay, Sydney Hay, Dylan Hay,
twins Savannah Hay and Logan Hay, and Kevin Hay; a great-grandson, Derex Hay;
and five special nieces and nephews, David Hay, Clark Hay, Becky Cooper,
Jonathan Hay and Jennifer Preston.
Preceding him in death were his parents.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at
Hawks-Shelley Funeral Home in Wellington, with family receiving friends from 6
to 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First
Presbyterian Church in Wellington. Burial will be at Prairie Lawn Cemetery in
Wellington.
Memorials have been established with First Presbyterian
Church, Wellington Humane Society and the Alzheimer's Association in lieu of flowers.
