Willy 'Bill' J. Svoboda

Willy "Bill" J. Svoboda was born Dec. 2, 1930, in rural Cuba, Kan., and departed this life on Friday (Aug. 28, 2009) at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

He was the son of Rosemary and William Svoboda. They preceded him in death.

He married Dorothy Novak on May 24, 1951, in Belleville. Bill served in the message center for the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was the owner of Newton Machine and Supply in Newton.

He was a woodworker and made many pieces of furniture. He also was an avid Hudson (auto) collector. Bill was a people person and never knew a stranger. His favorite sayings were "How's your liver?" and "Kiss a goat".

He was a member of Old Main Church of Christ in Newton.

Those left to mourn include his wife, Dorothy, of the home; two daughters, Susan Robinson and husband, Rex, of Mt. Hope, and Vicki Goldsberry of Newton; two sons, Mark Svoboda and wife, Trish, of Excelsior Springs, Mo., and Curtis Svoboda of Independence, Mo.; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He also was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

A public visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. today at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton.

The family will celebrate his life in a service at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel.

Inurnment will be at National Cemetery in rural Narka.

A memorial has been set up for the Old Main Church of Christ Building Fund in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
