Elizabeth R. Schmidt

Elizabeth R. Schmidt, 97, died Friday (March 6, 2009) at Schowalter Villa in Hesston.

She was born June 9, 1911, in Hillsboro to Gerhard W. and Elizabeth H. (Rempel) Funk. They preceded her in death.

On May 26, 1932, she married Adolf E. Schmidt in Hillsboro. He preceded her in death on June 17, 1994.

Elizabeth was a member of Faith Mennonite Church in Newton. She enjoyed quilting and sewing, and she shared her quilts with her family. Family was very important to Elizabeth. She enjoyed cooking and baking for her family, and she greatly looked forward to their visits.

Survivors include sons, Marvin Schmidt of Peabody, and Bob and Glendene Schmidt of North Newton; daughters, Betty and Laurence Bartel of Newton, LaWanda and Emerson Wiens of Newton, Lola and Jim Suderman of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Dorothy and Lewis Schmidt of Hutchinson; 21 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton, with family receiving friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Faith Mennonite Church in Newton, with Pastor Gordon Smith of the church officiating.

Burial will be at Restlawn Gardens of Memory in Newton.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mennonite Central Committee in care of the funeral home.
