Gladys Jantz

Gladys Jantz, 90, died Friday (Jan. 2, 2009) in North Newton. She was born July 10, 1918, to Henry and Lydia Groening of Lehigh. She married Harvey Jantz on May 1, 1938, and they had one daughter, Delora (Jantz) Decker of North Newton. A lifetime educator, Gladys taught in a number of rural schools. Later, she taught first grade in town at Hillsboro Elementary School and was their first librarian. She and her husband, Harvey, both retired from education in 1979. Gladys was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She had a special place in her heart for children and a deep and abiding love for her Lord. She demonstrated her care and concern for her family and friends as she remembered each of them by name in daily prayer.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Harvey Jantz; her parents, Henry and Lydia Groening; stepmother, Sarah; two sisters, Alice Knaak and Marcella Unruh; and grandson-in-law, Neal Denno.

Those who survive her and cherish her in their hearts include a daughter, Delora (Jantz) Decker and husband, Jerry, of North Newton; granddaughters, Gail (Decker) Pryce and husband, Terry, and Denetta (Decker) Denno, all of North Newton; and great-grandchildren, Sierra Pryce, Maisie Pryce, Kaven Denno and Chloe Denno, all of North Newton.

Visitation with family present will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Jost Funeral Home in Hillsboro.

Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Gnadenau Cemetery in rural Hillsboro, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church.

In loving memory of Gladys, memorials may be designated to the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church Library Fund.
