Smith, Elizabeth Harriett "Betty," of Wichita, died Jan. 28, 2009. She was born Feb. 21, 1913 in Harvey County, the second of 12 children of Alvin and Ella M. (Pierce) Royer. She graduated from North High School in 1930 and after graduation, she played independent league basketball. A few years later she married her sweetheart, Earl C. Smith, also of North High. They made their life together in Wichita and were married 55 years before Earl died in 1990. Betty was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother and friend. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brothers, Leonard, Kenneth, Gaylon and Keith Royer; her sisters, Ethel Mae, Josephine, Doreen (Royer) Lietzke and grandson, Tyler Wallack. She is survived by her sisters, Evelyn (Royer) Lawrence of Wichita/Newton, Helen (Royer) Hinshaw Welborn of Kansas City, Mo.; brothers, Max Royer of Phoenix, Ariz., Gary Royer of Newton; daughters, Lynda Smith Dennis of Santa Barbara, Calif., Maribeth Smith Wallack Robinson of Eureka, Nev.; six grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren. There will be a private graveside service.
