Bernice E. Ewing

Bernice E. Ewing, 87, passed away in Kansas City, Kan., on Sunday (Jan. 11, 2009). She was born July 12, 1921, in Lawrence, the daughter of Samuel and Mary Ellen Harris Gulley. Bernice moved to Topeka from Lawrence. Bernice was married to Donald H. Ewing on Sept. 14, 1941, in Kansas City. Donald preceded her in death in August 2003. She worked at Josten's for nearly ten years, and later owned and operated the Tastee-Freeze with her husband until retiring in 1976. In Topeka, Bernice was a member of Topeka Bible Church and the Philippians Sunday School Class at the church.

She was an avid gardener and loved the Kansas Jayhawks basketball team.

She lived in the Topeka area for more than 60 years before moving to Leawood, where she lived with her daughter and son-in-law.

Later she moved to Newton and had lived with her daughter, Connie, and husband, Roger, for several years. While living in Newton, she was a member of Halstead Baptist Church.

She is survived by her daughters, Bonnie Head and husband, Dave, of Kansas City, Kan., and Connie Ericksten and husband, Roger, of Newton; daughter-in law, Cheryl Ewing Larson of Sarasota, Fla.; brother, William 'Babe' Gulley in Virginia and wife, Bonnie; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son, Bruce Ewing, in August of 2008 and five brothers and sisters, Harriette, Elmer, Lester, Agnes and Wilbert.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Davidson Funeral Home in Topeka.

She will lie in state at the funeral home from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, prior to the service.
