Leland A. Mick

Leland A Mick, 69, of Newton, passed away Saturday (Aug. 9, 2008).

Leland was born May 29, 1939, on a farm in Tipton to Lawrence F. and Wilma (Greiner) Mick. They preceded him in death.

As a youth, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, basketball, baseball and spending time with his three brothers. He graduated from Tipton Catholic High School in 1957 as valedictorian of his class.

On Aug. 20, 1960, he married Doris Koenigsman, also of Tipton. Doris, his beloved wife of 41 years, preceded him in death.

He later married Annie Stephenson, and they spent most of their married life at Newton Presbyterian Manor. She preceded him in death.

He graduated from Creighton University in 1961. During his lifetime, Leland's career involved working as a school teacher in a one-room school house, being a manager with Bell Telephone, owning a manufacturing company, and later working for Collins Bus Manufacturing in Hutchinson and Keyes Manufacturing in Newton.

Leland's life centered on his faith and his family. He was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. In his lifetime, he coached numerous youth baseball and softball teams, and he served as a religious education instructor. He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and extended family members.

Leland is survived by eight children, Joan Slipke of Bristol, Conn., Tom and wife, Cindy, of Nebraska City, Neb., Doug and wife, Ellen, of Newton, Chris Bacon and husband, Mark, of Abilene, Karla McMillan and husband, Jeff, of Lyons, John and wife, Darlene, of Carleton, Neb., Richard and wife, Keri, of Newton, and Roger and wife, Christie, of Newton; 33 grandchildren; and three brothers, Kenny of Omaha, Neb., Larry and wife, Phyllis, of Mesa, Ariz., and David and wife, Jane, of Sand Springs, Okla.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday and from 9 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton.

Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Newton.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Jim Mainzer officiating.

Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Newton.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to St. Mary School Building Fund in Newton or the Alzheimer's Association, which may be sent in care of Petersen Funeral Home, 215 N. Main St., Newton KS 67114.
