Ruby Pauline Smith

Ruby Pauline Smith, 91, of North Newton, passed away Sunday (Aug. 17, 2008) in Wichita. She had fallen on Friday, August 15, fracturing her hip. After surgery on Saturday, she suffered heart problems and was transferred to Wesley Medical Center, where she expired with her family present.

Pauline was born March 5, 1917, in Moundridge, the eldest child of Frank and Lena Rudiger. They preceded her in death.

She attended Moundridge schools and spent her younger years helping care for the farm and her siblings.

She was married to Frank M. Smith on Dec. 9, 1947, and he preceded her in death on May 24, 1989.

In later years, she was a seamstress and homemaker.

Pauline was a friend to all who knew her and greatly enjoyed helping other people with her sewing handiwork, alterations, plants, flowers and cooking. She was very loyal to her family and friends, especially in her apartment complex at Wheatland Homes in North Newton. She was very involved in all these activities up until her death.

Pauline lived independently up until her fall. She had a very sharp mind and was able to enjoy her family and friends until she was taken home to be with the Lord. Her faith was very important to her during the years, and she expressed this clearly to her family over the last several days on this earth.

She is survived by daughter, Kay Burkett and husband, James, of West Liberty, Ohio, and their children, Anton Burkett of Genoa, N.Y., Jennifer and husband, Mike Nolt, of Elkhart, Ind., Stacey and husband, Joey Rodd, of Piedmont, S.C. and their children, Cody, Blake and Meagen; daughter, Karla Dennis and husband, David, of Salina, and their children, Jonathan and wife, Leah, Jeremy, Sean and Michelle; and daughter, Bonnie Loewen and husband, James, of Wichita, and their children, Christopher and Amanda; and a great-grandchild Anona, daughter of Anton Burkett.

She also is survived by siblings, Galen Rudiger and wife, Fern, of Newton, Irene Ratzlaff of Newton, and Doris Decker of Hernando, Miss., formerly of Galva; former brothers-in-law, Abe Nickel and wife, Lydia, of Medora, and Raymond Klatt of Galva.

Surviving brothers- and sisters-in-law are John and Elda Smith of Colorado Springs, Colo., Emaline Smith of Enid, Okla., Evelyn Smith of Newton, Ted and Val Veer of Newton, Ben and Frances Smith of Hesston, Anna Lee Smith of Danuba, Calif., Aaron and Elisabeth Smith of Burrton, LaVern and Marlene Smith of Omaha, Neb., and Mel and Lois Flaming of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

She also was preceded in death by an infant son, Marvin, and siblings, Susie Deckert and Frances Nickel.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton, with family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Resthaven Cemetery.
