Mildred L. Homan

Mildred L. Homan, 86, of Iola, formerly of Peabody and Newton, died Wednesday (Aug. 20, 2008) at Windsor Place Nursing Center in Iola. She was born Feb. 1, 1922, in Wichita to George W. and Ruth (McNicol) Dougherty. She grew up in Peabody and was a member of the Peabody High School graduating class of 1940. On Nov. 8, 1941, she married Harry Homan in Conway, S.C. They made their home in Peabody, where she was foremost a homemaker. She also worked at the Gambles store they owned and and as a teller for the Peabody State Bank.

After Mr. Homan died in 1987, she moved to Newton. In 2004, she moved to Iola to be near her daughter.

She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Iola, having transferred her membership from Trinity Heights United Methodist Church in Newton.

Mildred enjoyed square dancing and bowling.

Survivors include a daughter, Gerry Uphoff of Iola; son, Harry B. 'Butch' Homan and his wife, Maryann, of Las Vegas; a brother, Robert Dougherty and his wife, Barbara, of Knoxville, Tenn.; a sister-in-law, Joan of California; five grandchildren, Denise Dyke of Monroe, Ohio, Brian Uphoff of Fontana, Brandi Homan and Angie Homan, both of Chicago, and Erin Ingle of Prairie City, Iowa; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Frank G. Uphoff; a brother, Chuck Dougherty; and a sister, Connie Bingham.

There will be a visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel in Iola.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Heights United Methodist Church in Newton, with the Rev. Phil Fischer officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Prairie Lawn Cemetery in Peabody.

Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Support Group in Iola or Trinity Heights United Methodist Church in Newton.

Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel in Iola is in charge of arrangements.
