Ellis E. "Jack" Betts, 78, a former Garden City resident, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, at Newton Medical Center.

Born at Garden City on Feb. 5, 1922, he was the son of Frank Earnest and Hazel (Withers) Betts. A carpenter, Mr. Betts worked for Alumbaugh Management in Newton. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He married Virginia Rozabelle Menzie. She died in 1969. On July 23, 1977, he married Garnett L. Ayres Stroud at Garden City. She survives. He is also survived by three sons, Jay Roger, Newton, Jackie Wayne, Winslow, Ariz., and Richard, Vineyard, Minn.; two daughters, Judy Dara Martin, Newton, and Sharon Pierce, Fayetteville, Ark.; two stepsons, Jack Dean Stroud, Buna, Texas, and Robert Eugene Stroud, Tulsa, Okla.; a stepdaughter, Beverly Jo Galentine, Cottonwood Falls; four sisters, Stella Whitlock, Boise, Idaho, Carole Johnson, Fort Scott, Martha Mae Miller, Garden City, and Rose Marie Moore,, Euless, Texas; three brothers, Daryle Betts, Idaho Springs, Colo., Ronald Betts and Monte Betts, both of Central Point, Ore.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Hazel Cecil, Midge Miller, Jerry Earnest and Katheryn Kahrs. There will be no service. Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, Newton, is in charge of the arrangements.
