Shirley Arlene McClure

Shirley Arlene McClure, 79, died Friday (June 26, 2009) at Hospice House in Hutchinson. She was born on Aug. 20, 1929, in rural Marion County near Peabody, the daughter of Stanley Perlee and Hazel Evalina VanTuyl McClave. Shirley attended Peabody Grade School and graduated from Peabody High School in 1947. She then graduated from Kansas City Secretarial School in 1948. She worked as a secretary and bookkeeper for Koehn Associates Construction Co. in Newton for 21 years. A former resident of Peabody and Newton, she moved to Hutchinson in 2007. Shirley loved to travel and was an avid quilter and bowler. She also volunteered for the National Parks in Colorado and at Dillon Living Center in Hutchinson.

On March 13, 1948, she married Lawrence Glen McClure at the Baptist Church in Newton. He survives.

Other survivors include daughter, Chris Hughes and husband, Jack, of Palmer, Alaska; son, Michael K. McClure and wife, Marcie McKinnell, of Hutchinson; four grandchildren, Trisha (Hughes) Witmer of Minneapolis, Minn., Tracy (Hughes) Tracy of Wasilla, Alaska, Cory Hughes of Palmer and Derek Hughes of Indianapolis; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a twin brother, Donald Gene McClave.

Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Tuesday at Elliott Chapel in Hutchinson, with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

A memorial graveside service will be at 10 a.m July 7 at Prairie Lawn Cemetery in Peabody.

Cremation has taken place.
