He completed his basic training in Colorado Springs, Colorado, before being stationed at White Sands, New Mexico; McConnell Air Force Base, Wichita; and at Bentwaters AFB, Suffolk, England. While in the Air Force, he worked as an electronic lab technician in PMEL (Precision Measurement Equipment Laboratory), calibrating equipment in measurements as small as millionths.

On Aug. 18, 1973, he married Linda Miller of Hesston. After their time in the Air Force, they established their home on the family farm east of Newton. Gary was a self-employed farmer in addition to establishing J & G Fabrication, a welding and fabrication business.

Gary was a good and loving family man.
