Douglas Lavon Coons, 66, passed away on Friday (Sept. 28, 2018) at his home in Newton.

Doug was born on Nov. 9, 1951, in Newton to Don and Betty Jo (Miller) Coons.

Doug attended Newton schools and was a graduate of Newton High School (class of 1969). Doug was active in sports and participated in many activities.

After graduation, Doug joined the United States Marine Corp and served as an Air Traffic Controller. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War.

He attended Emporia State University, where he received a dual degree in Business and Psychology. He worked for Holloman and Associates in Cincinnati as a construction designer. In the early 2000s, he moved back to Newton to help care for his father and brother, who were ill.

Doug enjoyed golfing, fishing, bowling and the New York Yankees. He loved the Marine Corp and lived by the phrase, "Once a marine, always a marine."

Doug and his neighbor, "Woodie," shared an evening meal and watched "NCIS" almost every night for 17 years. They were both Vietnam veterans and shared a mutual concern for each other.

In the last two years, Doug traveled through a very difficult journey with a life-ending illness. His beloved soulmate, Theresa Haynes, loved and cared for him during this difficult time. He also received support from his family and many friends.

He is survived by his beloved soulmate, Theresa Haynes; sister and her daughter, Kim and Charli Buckle; birth son, Mickey D. Coons; sons, Robert and Michael Haynes; and granddaughter, Roxy Coons.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Betty Coons; and brother, Kelly Coons.

An event to celebrate Doug's life will be held on Friday (Oct. 5, 2018) at the Acapulco Mexican Restaurant, 217 W. Broadway, Newton.
