Obituary

Micaela Avila Galvan, 91, died Sunday (Oct. 21, 2018) at the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice Center of Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

She was born on Sept. 29, 1927, in Teocaltiche, Mexico, the daughter of Paublo Avila and Marclena Oropeza. She was raised in Agua Caliente, Mexico. Micaela married Augustine O. Ruiz in 1946 in Mexico, shortly after which they moved to the United States, settling in Strong City. She later married Alexander Galvan in 1970.

Micaela lived in Strong City until moving to Newton in 1990. She was a longtime member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, where she was active in the Altar Society. For many years she cleaned houses in Strong City and Newton. For a short time, she worked at ResCare in Newton before retiring. She enjoyed doing volunteer work in the area.

Survivors include her sons, Antonio Ruiz and his wife Jo of Fairborn, Ohio, and Agustin ""Gus"" Ruiz and Raymond Galvan, both of Wichita; daughters, LuzMaria ""Lucy"" James of Wichita, Leticia Cantu of Newton and Victoria Martin and husband Rob of Sequim, Washington; sister, Socorro Avila of Mexico; 18 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren

Mrs. Galvan is preceded in death by her parents; son, Michael Joseph Ruiz; daughters, Beatriz Delores Ruiz and Maria Teresa ""Terri"" Gutierrez; great-granddaughter, Kellie Christine Selzer Doyle; brother, Jose Avila; and sister, Carmen Pina.

The Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 24, 2018), with the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Thursday (Oct,.25, 2018), both at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Newton. The casket will be open between 1 and 5 p.m. Wednesday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home.

A memorial has been established with Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. Contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, KS 67114.
