Clara S. Conner
Clara S. Conner, 97, died
Saturday (Aug. 4, 2007) at Kansas Christian Home in Newton. She was born on
March 22, 1910, in Newton to John J. and Selma (Krueger) Grochowsky. On Oct. 7,
1926, she married Bradshaw Conner. Together they celebrated 71 years of
marriage. He passed away October 1997. She volunteered in many ways. She
volunteered with USO and the Red Cross serving service men food. She served
troops trains at the Harvey Building as a Harvey Girl. She was a Harvey Girl
until the Harvey House closed in Newton. She worked at Bethel Clinic as a
receptionist for 20 years. After retirement she was the head of the volunteer
program at Bethel Hospital for 12 years. She was active in the First Christian
Church where she was a member.
Survivors include a daughter,
Ione Toevs of Newton; a son, Ronald Conner of Chula Vista, Calif.;
granddaughters, Denise Ternes of Belle Fourche, S.D. and Connie Toevs of
Coppell, Texas; grandsons, Brad Conner of Denver, Colo. and Shawn Conner of
Katy, Texas; a granddaughter, Kerry Schnackanberg of Arkansas City; 10
great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by
her parents; brothers, John and Harry Grochowsky and a sister, Edna Maddeford.
Visitation will be from 5 to
9 p.m. today at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home Chapel in Newton with family
present from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Service will be at 2 p.m.
Wednesday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain Denny Bell
officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton.
Memorials may be made to
First Christian Church, Kansas Christian Home or Oddessy Hospice in Hutchinson
in care of the funeral home.
