Samuel George Mull

Samuel George Mull, 99, resident of Friendly Acres Nursing Home in Newton, died Wednesday (Sept. 25, 2002) after a short illness. He was born Dec. 4, 1902, to Gottlieb and Anna Herrdum in Gerresheim, Germany. They preceded him in death. He married Augusta K. Kater March 9, 1925, in Wichita. She preceded him in death May 12, 1987. He and a brother, August, and his parents immigrated to the United States in December 1905, entering at Galveston, Texas. They came by train to Peabody where they were met by Bernard Regier of Elbing who had sponsored their immigration. They were to live on the Regier farm for the next five years, until their contract had been fulfilled. His father next moved the family to a farm north of Elbing where the family stayed until 1921, when the Mull family moved to the farm north of Newton.

He attended the Evangelical and Reformed Church in Newton where he met Augusta Kater. They were married and started farming near Newton where their children – Neva, Doris, Eunice and Daniel were born. In 1960, George and Augusta (Gussie) moved to Newton. He then was employed as a machinist assembler and inspector for the Hesston Corporation. He retired in 1967 and he and Gussie moved to the Wheatland Homes in North Newton in 1977. He will be remembered for his many hobbies and pastimes, which included causal and tournament horseshoes, pool, polka and square dancing, and entertaining his friends, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren with his accordion and harmonica playing. He was very active, swimming and walking until a few years before his death.

Survivors include four children, Neva Nelson of Newton, Doris Wedel of Overland Park, Eunice Grimm of Parker, Colo., and Daniel Mull of Newton; two sisters, Anna Kasitz of Escondido, Calif., and Kathryn Buchmueller of Pratt; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by Siblings Elinor, August and Carl.

Visitation will be until 9 p. m. today with family greeting friends from 7 to 8:30 p. m. at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home.

Services will be held 10:30 p. m. Friday at Broadway Colonial Funeral with the Rev. Loren Hickerson officiating.

Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with First United Church of Christ and Friendly Acres Retirement Community, both in care of the funeral home.
