Wallis E. "Wally" Schmidt

Wallis E. "Wally" Schmidt, 75, Hillsboro, died Tuesday (July 4, 2006) at Newton Medical Center. He was born July 21, 1930, in Hillsboro to George and Sara (Epp) Schmidt. He married Neoma Wiebe Oct. 16, 1949, in Whitewater. She survives of the home. He was a member of the Columbus Avenue Church of Christ in Newton. He served his country in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves for nearly 25 years. He worked for Bob Smalley Appliance repair, Eastgate Bowling Lanes and Boeing prior to his retirement as assistant civil engineer for Harvey County. He also ran Wally's Lockshop for many years. He was a member of Newton Lodge 143 AF&AM and York Rite where he held various positions including junior Steward. After his retirement, he took up woodworking and shared his creations with his friends and the children of his church. He looked forward to spending time with his friends at his McDonald's Coffee Group. He also looked forward to spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren.

He also is survived by four daughters, Patricia Hayes of Knoxville, Tenn., Tina Sander of Ardmore, Okla., Teresa Schmidt of Hutchinson and Elda Reimer of Newton; a grand-daughter, Sydney Poker; and two grandsons, Zachary Hoover and Colin Sander.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Waldmir Schmidt; and a sister, Hulda Meyers.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Colombus Avenue Church of Christ with Buddy Aldridge officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m today at Petersen Funeral Home.

A graveside service with military honors will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Restlawn Gardens of Memory in rural Newton.

Memorial finds have been established with Columbus Avenue Church Food Pantry in care of the funeral home.
