Walter D. Bradshaw
Walter D. Bradshaw, 93, died
Sunday (July 30, 2006) at his residence in Newton. He was born on July 27,
1913, to Ira Otto and Viva Irine (Mishler) Bradshaw in Crestline. He married
Mildred M. Martin July 27, 1933, in Pryor, Okla. She preceded him in death on
April 18, 1985. He married Rita Younkin on April 6, 1991, in Newton. She survives
of the home. Walter was raised in the Pittsburg area and served his country as
a captain in the U.S. Army from 1940 to 1947. He then served as a commander of
a National Guard unit in Chillicothe, Mo. In 1949, he moved to Newton and built
and owned the first Dairy Queen. He also owned Dairy Queens in Hays and
McPherson. He later worked for the U.S. Post Office, sold investments for IDS
and was a salesman for KEVCO, all in Newton. He retired at the age of 70.
Walter was commander of the Civil Air Patrol and a member of the Newton Elks
Club. He was an active member of the Newton Shrine Club, Newton Lodge No. 142
AF & AM, Newton Shrine Hobos, Wichita Consistery, and he volunteered with
the American Red Cross. Walter also was a life member of the Newton Veterans of
Foreign Wars and American Legion posts. He enjoyed spending time at Marion
Lake, fishing and boating. He also enjoyed reading and traveling. Walter looked
forward to spending time with his many family friends.
Other survivors include:
sons, Martin D. Bradshaw of Placitas, N.M., and Walter L. Bradshaw of
Plainfield, N.J.; a daughter, Lynda Tincher of Lyndon; a sister, Helen Hanson
of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a stepson, Bill Younkin of Ottawa; grandchildren,
Kevin Bradshaw, Janell Giesler, Eric Tincher, Bryon Tincher, Allison Bradshaw,
Katie Bradshaw, Scott Younkin and Stacy Younkin; and great-grandchildren,
Lauren Cannon, Collin Cannon, Melissa Martin, Kaitlin Giesler, Matthew Tincher,
Colton Tincher, Grant Tincher of Newton, Austin Younkin, Shelby Younkin,
William Younkin, Cooper Younkin and Dakota Younkin.
He also was preceded in death
by: a sister, Sybyl Dorsey; and a son, Sherry Dale Bradshaw.
Visitation will be from 6:30
to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Petersen Funeral Home.
Service will be at 10 a.m.
Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. James W. Anderson
officiating.
Graveside service will be 4
p.m. Thursday at Park Cemetery in Columbus.
Memorials have been
established with Shriner's Plane of Mercy and the donor's choice, both in care
of the funeral home.
