Ann Gillig

Ann (Annie) Dora Unruh Gillig, 87, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., died Aug. 2, 2006. She was born Jan. 13, 1919, in Goessel, Kansas, to Daniel F. Unruh and Elizabeth Duerksen Unruh. Ann graduated from Goessel High School in 1936. She attended Bethel College in North Newton for two years, obtained her teaching certificate and taught elementary school in rural Marion County from 1938 through 1940. Ann moved to California and in 1946 moved to Washington, D. C., where she worked for the Department of the Air Force in human resources. Ann obtained her bachelor of science degree in social studies from The American University in 1949 and obtained her master's degree in social studies from The American University in 1955. In 1964, Ann married Harry Gillig. Shortly thereafter, they both retired and moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Ann was passionately devoted to music and was a very gifted singer. She enjoyed giving her time, energy and financial resources to bring the beauty of music to others. She was a true patron of the arts. Her many musical affiliations included: Philharmonic Society; Morning Musicale of Fort Lauderdale; Opera Society; Symphony Society; Metropolitan Opera Guild (NYC); National Federation of Music Clubs; Florida Federation of Music Clubs, Inc.; The Opera Guild; Greater Miami Opera Guild; The Singing Sons; and the choir of the Second Presbyterian Church. Additionally, Ann contributed her boundless energy to other organizations, including: The Air Force Association; Friends of the Library; Museum of Art; Broward Public Library Foundation; 1000 Plus Club of American Cancer Society; and countless other charitable groups and organizations.

Ann lived a robust life on her own terms and had an infectious joy about living that elevated those around her. Her wit, charm and intelligence were beyond compare. She enjoyed traveling, loved her many pets and dearly cherished her family roots, relatives and many friends. Ann was a loyal and faithful member of the Second Presbyterian Church.

Ann was survived by: her niece, Shelby Whiteley of Fort Worth, Texas; nephews, Dale Krause of Buena Park, Calif., Joel Park of North Potomac, Md., Gary Park of Wichita and Keith Park of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; and stepchildren, Deanna Jo Kline of Herington and Thomas Max Chase.

Ann was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Harry Gillig.

Memorial services will be held at noon on Sunday at the Second Presbyterian Church, 1400 N. Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304-1495.

Memorials have been established in Ann's memory with the American Cancer Society or any other charity of choice.
