Passenger also dies in motorcycle crash

A woman who was the passenger on a motorcycle that crashed Sunday night on Northeast 14th died Sunday night at Via Christi Medical Center- St. Francis of her injuries. Neither 48-year-old Betty Jo Schmidt nor the driver,  49-year-old Jay Betts, were wearing helmets, police said. Betts was pronounced dead at the scene. Both were Newton residents. The motorcycle crossed the center line and collided with a one-ton truck. No one was injured in the truck.
