S.F. 'Mike' Alvarez
S.F. "Mike"
Alvarez, 82, of Newton died Monday (Dec. 11, 2006) at Newton Medical Center. He
was born Oct. 8, 1924, in Abilene to Miguel and Jessie (Lopez) Alvarez. On Oct.
27, 1951, he married Socorro Lopez in Osage City. She survives of the home.
Mike served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He looked forward
to his Army reunion of the 727 Amphibious unit, which he attended faithfully
for 23 years. He retired following 46 years as a roadmaster for the Santa Fe
Railroad. He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Eagles
Lodge and Veterans of Foreign Wars, all of Newton. Mike enjoyed woodworking and
made many gifts for his family and friends. He enjoyed bowling and the
Mexican-American Fast Pitch Tournament. Mike looked forward to spending time
with his many family and friends and especially looked forward to spending time
with his grandkids and following their activities.
Survivors include: his wife,
Soccoro Alvarez of Newton; daughter, Barbara and Pat Zenner of Newton; son,
Richard Alvarez of Wichita; brothers, Ralph Alvarez of San Diego, Frank Alvarez
of Newton and John Alvarez of Abilene; sisters, Louise Llamas of Abilene and
Pat Estrada of Newton; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by
father Miguel Alvarez; Jessie Alvarez; brothers, Manuel Alvarez, Raymond
Alvarez, Tony Alvarez and John Alvarez; and sisters, Esther Alvarez, Catherine
Alvarez, Socorro Alvarez and Lupe Fuentes.
Visitation will be from 1 to
5 p.m. Wednesday at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton.
The Recitation of the Holy
Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
Family will receive friends in Guadalupe Hall following the Rosary service.
Funeral service will be at 10
a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Newton with the Rev.
Floyd McKinney officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be
made to Harry Hynes Hospice and Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in care
of the funeral home.
