Heckendorn, Dale A

from FAG

Dale A Heckendorn was the son of Merle A and Velma Dean Jenkins Heckendorn. He married Lynda M Satterfield 26 Mar 1977 in Denver, CO.

HECKENDORN, DALE A. Passed away on October 5, 2008. A Memorial Service will be held at Fairmount Mortuary on Saturday, October 11 at 10:00 a.m., with burial to follow immediately.

Dale Heckendorn died suddenly at age 56.

Anyone connected to the world of preservation or historical research in Colorado knew Dale Heckendorn.
Whether it involved a mansion, gas station or railroad, his devotion to protecting the state's history earned him a top spot at the Colorado Historical Society addressing properties destined for the State or National Register of Historic Places.

History was enough of a driving force that after 16 years as a store manager for Walgreen's, the Kansas native returned to school to study history. He then worked as an intern at Historic Denver Inc. and the historical society before joining that staff.

"His level of knowledge and expertise was invaluable, along with his commitment to providing prompt and thorough customer service," said Ed Nichols, the society's president and CEO. "Dale's gentle demeanor partnered with a sharp wit delighted his coworkers, his colleagues, and all who had the pleasure of interacting with him."
But that came to an end Sunday when Mr. Heckendorn died of a sudden heart attack at age 56 on his way home to Aurora.
He was born in Newton, Kan., on Jan. 4, 1952, and was a toddler when his parents, Merle and Velma Heckendorn, moved to Colorado. After graduating from Kennedy High School he earned a degree in business management from the University of Colorado at Denver and began working for Walgreen's.

But history pulled at him; he returned to UCD to study that subject, then turned to it for his next career. An early project was researching historic advertising signs on the brick buildings of lower downtown.

As a volunteer with the society, he worked in the Roadside Interpretation Program. In 1993, he was hired as the National Register Coordinator, a position that evolved into National and State Register Coordinator, then Director of the Preservation Planning Unit.
Mr. Heckenforn is survived by his wife of more than 30 years, Lynda Heckendorn, and his mother; his father preceded him in death.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. today at Fairmount Chapel, East Alameda Avenue at Quebec Street. Burial will follow; no reception is planned.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Colorado Historical Society or the American Heart Association.
