GOESSEL -- Wilber H. Vogt, 85, died Friday (Aug. 17, 2001).

He was born July 2, 1916, to Peter F. and Hattie (Bachus) Vogt in Inman. He married Bonnie D. Smith Aug. 15, 1948, at Zion Lutheran Church in Newton. She survives.

He graduated from Hillsboro High School in May 1936. During World War II he served in the Armed Services with the 753rd Tank Battalion from 1943 to 1945. He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith on Jan. 29, 1950, at Zion Lutheran Church in Hillsboro, where he went on to serve as elder. Throughout his life he remained active in the Lutheran church, holding many different positions. He owned and operated the W.H. Vogt Lumber Company in Goessel from 1950 to 1972. He took his family to live in California in 1977 and remained active in both church and the lumber business while there. He returned to Kansas in 1992.

Other survivors include: a daughter, Darla Lopez of San Diego; a sister, Dorothy Funk of Hillsboro; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by: a son, Larry Vogt; and two brothers, Ray Vogt and Kenneth Vogt.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Baker Funeral Home in Peabody.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church in Newton.

Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
