John T. Bartsch, Sr., 76, accountant, died Wednesday (Nov. 22, 2000) at his residence in Hesston, KS.He was born Nov. 27, 1923, to Paul W. and Gertrude (Penner) Bartsch in Newton, KS. They preceded him in death. He married Florence M. Toevs Oct. 15, 1943, in Newton. She survives.He attended Newton public schools and graduated from Newton High School in 1941. He enlisted in the U. S. Army Feb. 24, 1943, obtaining the rank of sergeant, and he served in England until his honorable discharge in September, 1945. Following his service, he attended The University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS, graduating in 1949 with a bachelor of science degree in accounting. He was employed as an accountant for 41 years, working at Newton Finance and Investment Company, Newton, KS; Bankers Investment Co., Hutchinson, KS; Security Pacific, Hutchinson and Los Angeles, CA; and Back to the Bible Broadcast, Lincoln, NE. He retired in 1990. He was a founding member of the Newton Bible Church in Newton, KS. He formerly served on the board of directors of Grace University in Omaha, NE, Berean Academy of Elbing, KS, and Central Christian High School in Hutchinson. He was a member of Gideons International. He enjoyed golf, Nebraska football, K. U. basketball and others, and he loved music.Other survivors include: four sons, John Bartsch, Jr. of Keizer, OR, James Bartsch of Newell, IA, Gregory Bartsch of Lincoln, NE, and Gary Bartsch of Newton; two daughters, Carol Steiner of Lincoln, NE, and Marilyn Ward of Kansas City, MO; a brother, Paul Bartsch of Kansas City, MO; a sister, Barbara McCartney of Topeka, KS; thirteen grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.Visitation will be until 9 p.m. today with family greeting friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home.Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Newton Bible Church with Pastor Don Myer officiating.
