Obituary

Betty Adams, 94, died March 5, 2022, at Schowalter Villa in Hesston.

She was born Feb. 7, 1928, in McPherson County. She was the daughter of Lewis H. Wilhelm and Clara F. Ensminger and the 10th of 12 children in the family. She moved to Newton to live with her sister in 1944 to finish high school, graduating Newton High School in 1946. Then, Betty went to cosmetology school in Salina, returning to Newton to work as a hairdresser for 45 years.  Betty had a friend who just so happened to be a niece of her future husband, Melvin Adams. They were introduced, fell in love and eventually married on Dec. 5, 1948, establishing their home in Newton.

Betty was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Newton and a member of the UM Women and Rachel Circle. She loved life, her family, her profession, and was, as she called herself, a ?people-person.?

Melvin & Betty had five children: Larry Melvin Adams (stillborn), Melva Lea Caldwell, Newton, Kenneth Wayne Adams (infant death), L.J. Adams, wife, Brenda, Streetman, Texas, and Rick Adams, Arlington, Texas. She loved hearing about all the activities of her grandchildren as they were growing up, and years later, she tried keeping up with all the great-grandchildren she was blessed to have: Rodd Caldwell and wife, Heather, children Helen, Lily and Garrison, Lucas, Texas, Alyson Voran and husband, Shane, daughters Skylar and Rylee, Lehigh, Jason Adams, wife, Courtney, children, McKenzie, Hunter and Brady, Arlington, Texas, Joshua Adams, wife, Brooke, children, Georgia, Cash, Vann, Satcher and Saylor, Arlington, Texas, Jordan Adams, wife Jennifer, children Jaden, Jett and Jax, Plano, Texas, Chloe Aduddell, husband, Kevin, daughters, Kinsey, Kirby, Caitlyn and Cassie, Richardson, Texas, Hope Adams, Dallas, Texas, and Molly Adams, Arlington, Texas. All told, she loved to count them up for a total of eight grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. 

Betty was preceded in death by eight sisters, three brothers, her husband, Melvin, and two infant sons.  She is survived by her sister, Mary Ann Taylor in California and many nieces and nephews from Kansas, California, Nevada, Texas, Missouri, Connecticut, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 12, at First United Methodist Church in Newton. A private family interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Newton. In lieu of flowers, the family would like you to consider a donation to the UMW and Rachel Circle at: First United Methodist Church, 801 N. Main St., Newton, KS 67114.
