Peabody Man Charged In Death of Father

Harvey County News

A 43-year-old Peabody man has been charged with the death of his father. Lamoine Wiebe is now charged with first degree murder. His father, 78-year-old Richard Wiebe was found dead of a gunshot wound to the chest.

It started Sunday morning with the Harvey County Sheriff?s Office being requested by Wichita Police to do a welfare check at 3401 SW 60th, in Sedgwick. At around 10:00 a-m, Harvey County Deputies discovered the body Richard Wiebe in a 5th wheel trailer inside a large tin building.

An autopsy done on Monday and they concluded the death of Richard Wiebe was caused by shotgun wounds to the chest.

Search warrants were conducted at the property of 3401 SW 60th as well as a stolen vehicle recovered by the Wichita Police Department. Apparently, Lamoine Wiebe had gotten into a chase for a time with Wichita Police, but as the chase started to enter Old Town, the chase ended, but he was then discovered in the alleged stolen vehicle by Park City Police. He was arrested on charges of felony flee and elude and felony theft for the stolen vehicle.

Sheriff Walton says the chase in Wichita started around 2:30 a-m Sunday morning, and he was arrested sometime after that, around 4 a-m.

Officials say from discoveries made through the search warrants, Lamoine Wiebe was transported to the Harvey County Detention Center on Monday afternoon. He was again charged with murder in the 1st degree and has had a bond set at $750,000.00.

No date has been set as of yet for a preliminary hearing with County Attorney David Yoder saying he would announce that sometime later. Yoder also wouldn?t rule out the possibility of additional charges being filed, but declined to specify what the additional charges might be.

No motive or circumstances that led to the killing was released, with Yoder saying he didn?t want to release to much details of the case or evidence prior the preliminary hearing.

Although neither the sheriff or the county attorney would comment on the suspects past criminal history, we check the Kansas Department of Corrections website and saw that he has numerous convictions starting in 1994 with the last being in 2007.

We counted 25-misdemeanor or felony convictions and included such crimes as robbery, manufacture of methamphetamine, flee and elude, theft, burglary and aggravated burglary, all out of Sedgwick and Harvey Counties.
