Pauline Jones

Pauline Jones, 83, of Newton, died Tuesday (July 25, 2000) at home.

She was born Aug. 3, 1916 in Harrisburg, Ill. to James Harry and Effie Wright-Stites-Piland. She was later adopted by Dr. Joseph Richard and Mary Ellen Adams. She was raised in Stillwater, Okla. and the Cassody and El Dorado areas. She graduated from El Dorado High School. She married Cleland "Pee Wee" Jones Aug. 4, 1935 in Wichita. He died Aug. 3, 1981.

She worked in sales for Montgomery Ward and JC Penney stores, for the former Plastics International of Newton, as a crew chief for Boeing and later worked for Beech military aircraft, both during World War II, for the Fred Harvey Laundry and for Presbyterian Manor in Newton. She also had her own company, Pauline's Creations, where she marketed her own arts and crafts.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Newton where she also was part of the Christian Women's Fellowship and the Ruth Circle. She was a member of Newton Carriage Factory Art Association, the Newton Medical Center Community Association and the Kansas Christian Home Auxiliary.

Along with her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Elizabeth Piland, Anna Stites and Elsie Mae Handy Ventris; and two brothers, Hubert Piland and Bill Stites.

Survivors include: a daughter, Terrie Lynne Portlock of Newton; a son, Don Leroy Jones of Newton; a brother, Otis Adams of El Dorado; a sister, Juanita Panky of Romance, Ark.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, with family greeting friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church in Newton with Rev. MyCherie Zimmerman officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Newton.

A memorial has been established with Kansas Christian Home in care of the funeral home.
