Anniversary Of Newton Woman's Disappearance

Chad Frey - The Newton Kansan

Sasha Brooks (Kosminski) of Newton has been missing since Dec. 16, 2020. A blow to her family, which now struggles with a pair of difficult losses while clinging to the hope that Brooks will be found.

"We had already previously lost our son," said Shirley Brooks, Sasha's mother. "Our son passed away in 2008 and he was 25. Sasha's case is still an open case and it is ongoing."

Sasha represents an unsolved case for the Newton Police Department, and currently is the only missing person case on the books at NPD.  According to Deputy Chief Scott Powell. There has been no evidence of foul play - "really no evidence of what happened to her at all.  We are asking the community if they have any information to come forward," Shirley said. "We are praying for her safe return."

In the days and weeks after her disappearance the police department investigated the disappearance, interviewing anyone who might know something about where Brooks might have gone. They "pinged" her cell phone, and searched every location that came back.  Nothing has been found, not even the cell phone that led them to the field in the first place.

Powell said Brooks now appears in every database possible, and any interaction with law enforcement anywhere in the U.S. that results in an identity check will trigger a call to the NPD.  But those interactions have not occurred. Brooks is missing.  "Her family has hope, and we can't tell them not to have hope," Powell said.

A missing persons poster, created by Kansas Missing and Unsolved, circulates on Facebook. "We are still working on this," Powell said. The police department can be reached at 316-284-6030.
