Evelyn Ruth Sommerfeld, 80, of Newton, died April 19, 2023 at Newton Medical Center after a brief illness.
She was born December 1, 1942 in Larned, the daughter of Frederick and Dorothy (Burres) Dorland. On October 13, 1961 she married Milford Sommerfeld in McPherson. He preceded her in death on August 30, 1989. She was a former owner of a floral and gift shop in Canton and had been a Newton resident for 30 years, moving from Canton. She was a member of the Canton Christian Church.
Survivors include her three daughters, Christine (Jeff) McMannis and Jackie Ewert, all of Canton and Tami (Greg) Kohlman, Wichita; a sister, Mary (Charles) Fleming, Big Cabin, Oklahoma; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and her best friend, Laurie Hall of Newton. She was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Kyle McMannis and Jill (Ewert) Lee, a son-in-law, Bob Ewert, two brothers, Leonard and Glen Dorland and two sisters, Sylvia Flaming and Margaret Morris.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service is pending and will be announced later by Olson's Mortuary, Canton.
