F.E. Garrigan, of Stevens & Garrigan, Hardware merchants from Leavenworth, started from Peabody, last Friday, for Newton. While attempting to cross Doyle Creek, his horses became unmanagable and he jumped into the water and swam to shore. The horses, after floundering a while, drowned. Henry Mayer, who happened to be coming from Peabody on horse back about the same time, met with the same impediment in crossing the creek. He jumped from his horse and swam to shore, but instead of his horse drowning the noble animal worked and persevered until he reached the shore also. Mr. Garrigan succeeded in reaching Newton, but in a very weak state. The Harvey County News, Newton, Kansas. Thursday, June 14, 1877. Page 3.
